Telescope Dolland London Achromatic Spyglass Large 1810-1820 – RARE Antique Explorer's Scope – Suede Wood Brass – Museum Display Piece
Step back into the 19th-century Age of Sail with this genuine antique spyglass. In your hands, the Dolland London Achromatic Telescope becomes a portal to exploration—bringing distant horizons and childhood adventures to vivid life. Its suede-wrapped wood veneer barrel and engraved brass fittings glisten like discovered treasure, each telescoping segment evoking wonder and joy. More than mere décor, this bold instrument preserves maritime history in every detail, inviting the imagination on endless voyages of discovery.
Key Features & Provenance
Era & Maker: Circa 1810-1820 by Dolland London (the successors to John Dollond’s famed optics firm). Dollond’s workshop pioneered the first achromatic telescope in 1758 eliminating the rainbow halos of earlier lenses. In fact, the Royal Museums Greenwich archives list a pocket version with near-identical 1810 ‘Dollond/London’ markings underscoring this piece’s authentic pedigree.
Materials & Craftsmanship: A stout wood mahogany barrel lavishly wrapped in rich dark suede, paired with solid brass fittings. The effect is that of fine artistry: every brass ring and slider gleams with golden patina, and the suede provides a luxurious grip. This high-end craftsmanship makes the telescope feel as much like a treasure as a tool.
Dimensions & Design: An imposing four-draw telescope extending to about 33 inches (84 cm) in length. When collapsed, it is compact for display or storage. Each draw tube slides into the next with the classic Dolland slider design, allowing precise focusing. The sizeable objective (nearly 2″ aperture) once gathered ample light for daytime viewing across the waves.
Condition: All original and unrestored, it boasts a beautiful aged patina. (Note: the front objective lens is unfortunately broken, a mark of its long history.) The draw-tubes themselves still move smoothly when handled gently. Despite the cracked lens element, this telescope functions and is an amazing display piece with historical significance.
Rarity & Collectibility: A museum-quality antique, likely the only example of its kind on the private market today. Comparable Dolland/London 4-draw achromatic telescope spyglasses are known only from museum collections. This extraordinary rarity makes it a prized heirloom for collectors of scientific, nautical, and historical artifacts.
Display & Gift Ideas: Displaying this spyglass transforms any space into a story of adventure. Perched on a shelf, desk or mounted in a collection, it becomes a conversation piece and a window to the past. It also makes an unforgettable gift for the history buff or maritime enthusiast in your life — a ready-made centerpiece that carries centuries of exploration within its brass and wood. Whether you keep it as a focal point or share it as a treasure, owning this telescope means owning a narrative of discovery. Don’t miss your chance to add this rare nautical artifact to your collection. Claim this unique Dolland London heirloom today and display it proudly for generations to come.
